Free Spirit

Abajo en español - below in Spanish

There is something about the way wild horses run that remind me of the audacity of embracing your own nature. They follow their fundamental instinct to run and gallop with such boldness and determination, sparking a magical burst of energy. I see this phenomenon as a visual interpretation of “free spirit.”

Now, I always thought that I was not as free spirited as I wanted to be. Probably because I related the term “free spirit” with doing extreme outdoors sports, like climbing mountains or jumping from a 50 meter cliff. I am definitely not drawn to any of that sort. However, my perception changed a bit when a very special person in my life told me that I am indeed, creatively free spirited. One can be free spirited in many different ways.

But there is a kind of “free-spiritedness” that I crave to develop, which is to be more open when expressing a larger range of feelings and emotions to the outside world beyond close family and friends, perhaps with that same boldness and determination of that of wild horses. It is well known that communicating our emotions is vital for humans to navigate this complex world, yet it is still a very challenging task for those of us with a more reserved personality. Sometimes the urge to “keep it cool” overrides my will to fully express (or to even admit) my emotions, particularly anger or the likes.

Wild horses

I wish I dared to be as free as wild horses run,

release my thoughts and dreams, on a quest to be heard.

But then these self-critical thoughts come and say, “Hold your guts!”

Why the need to repress so much?

Hurt ego and fear of judgement, my uninvited guests.

Then I take some courage and think past the critics.

I remember I mean not to be normal, I mean to be real.

I am on this journey, to be more expressive of my sentiments,

I take this challenge with full joy and tenaciousness.

I am letting the guard down, just like free spirits do.
